At 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Savannah- Chatham Metropolitan Police officers responded to a report of shots being fired between two vehicles near the intersection of Howard Foss Drive and Jasmine Ave., according to spokesperson Jason Pagliaro.
Citizens reported a newer white Toyota Camry and an Infinity were exchanging gunfire while driving in the area.
At 4:00 a.m. a white Toyota Camry struck the side of a marked SCMPD Prisoner Transport van at Skidaway Road and Delessups Ave.
The Toyota fled the scene of the crash south on Skidaway Ave. A marked SCMPD patrol car gave chase to the suspect vehicle. The patrol car crashed into a culvert on Skidaway Road near the intersection with Scott Drive.
The officer was injured in the collision and was transported to Candler Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The white Toyota continued to flee. The cause of the patrol vehicle crash is still being investigated.
Skidaway Road near Scott Drive was closed for a brief period while the crash scene was cleared and a power pole was replaced.
Officers responding to the scene also located a white vehicle that was later determined to be unrelated to this incident. The 16-year-old driver of this vehicle was arrested after officers found him in possession of a stolen firearm.
