Monday storms turn out lights, knock down trees
Thunderstorms rolled through the Coastal Empire on Monday night, leaving downed trees and power outages in their wakes.
Wind gusts as high as 65 mph were reported in Chatham County, and trees were reported down across the county, said Emily Timte, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, S.C.
In Bloomingdale, seven people were reported injured when vehicles hit a tree fallen on a roadway, Timte said.
Trees across roadways also created problems on LaRoche Avenue in Chatham County and on Midland Road and Ga. 31 in Effingham County.
Just before 10 p.m., about 4,500 Georgia power customers were without power in Chatham, Bryan and Effingham counties, according to the company’s website. Earlier in the night, Georgia Power reported via social Twitter that more than 10,000 people were without power in the greater Savannah area.
Most outages were expected to be resolved by early morning.
