Man arrested in Chatham County with dozens of fake credit cards, documents

A Traffic stop Tuesday evening on Interstate 95 in Chatham County revealed dozens of fraudulent credit cards and other documents and resulted in the arrest of a 24-year-old man.

A Chatham County Sheriff’s Deputy made the initial traffic stop when he observed Jean Rene Metelus make a traffic violation, said Gena Bilbo, sheriff’s office spokeswoman. After the stop the deputy discovered Metelus’s driver’s license was suspended.

The deputy, part of the sheriff’s offices Criminal Interdiction Unit that patrols all of Chatham County, then discovered the 92 fraudulent credit cards, tax documents, thousands of names and identifiers, computers and approximately $5500 in cash, Bilbo said.

Metelus, who was booked into the Chatham County jail, was charged with financial transaction card fraud, financial identity fraud and driving on a suspended license.

The U.S. Secret Service, Bilbo said, is assisting in the continuing investigation.
