A Savannah man on Wednesday was convicted on murder and related charges in the 2011 slaying at a rooming house.
Anthony Bernard Morris, 46, was convicted after about 13 minutes of deliberations by a Chatham County Superior Court jury in the death of Sidon Antoine James, 21, at a West 41st Street address.
Judge Timothy R. Walmsley will sentence Morris later. He will remain in custody at the Chatham County jail.
According to DA spokesman Daniel Baxter, Morris approached James and Raheem Williams, 21, on Sept. 13, 2011, seeking drugs. Williams and James agreed to front Morris $10 worth of crack cocaine and collect payment later.
On Sept. 16, 2011, James and Williams went to collect their money from Morris. However, when the men met with Morris about paying them their money, James and Williams requested $50 as payment for the $10 worth of crack they had given him three days prior. During the discussion, Williams pulled a gun and took $100 from Morris.
Later that evening, Morris went looking for Williams with a borrowed 9 mm Glock pistol seeking to revenge for the incident that happened earlier in the day. Morris entered a rooming house on West 41st and confronted James, asking him the whereabouts of Williams. He then shot James in the stomach and in the head with the Glock. Once James hit the floor, Morris shot him four more times before he fled the residence.
Morris was later apprehended hiding behind a fence near Stevens and 44th streets.
Jurors convicted Morris on charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Baxter said.
