A 39-year-old woman was killed in a single-car wreck on Interstate 16 early Friday morning.

Carman Rivers, of Garden City, died at the scene of the crash at mile marker 151 between Old River Road and U.S. 17 in west Chatham County about 2:45 a.m. A passenger in the black Honda Civic found partially submerged in a water-filled ditch just off the embankment was extricated by Bloomingdale and Pooler firefighters and transported to Memorial University medical center where she was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

The police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing its investigation into the wreck, Baker said.

Police seek Thursday night shooting suspects

Savannah-Chatham police investigators are searching for three suspects they believe were involved in a Thursday night shooting in Savannah’s Tatemville neighborhood.

The suspects were last seen in a gold or brown late model Toyota Camry with lightly tinted windows traveling eastbound on Tatem Street, where a 21-year-old man was apparently shot about 11:18 p.m., said Eunicia Baker, police spokeswoman.

Police arrived at a house in the 600 block of Tatem Street after reports of multiple gunshots. Meanwhile, the victim showed up at Memorial University Medical Center where he was treated for a single gunshot wound to his forearm.

Burglary suspect arrested

A Savannah man suspected in a series of Windsor Forest home burglaries was arrested Friday afternoon.

Savannah-Chatham police captured 24-year-old Mishawn Green after a collaborative effort by Southside and Central Precinct officers and the Hinesville Police Department, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

Green has been charged with three break-ins between July 25 and Aug. 8 in which electronics were reported stolen. Detectives, Baker said, are investigating several other similar burglaries.

Torrential rainfall soaks Coastal Empire

Areas of localized flooding were reported through much of the Savannah area Friday evening as some areas received upward of three inches of rain by 8 p.m.

Water rose above sidewalk levels in several locations in downtown Savannah, but the heaviest rains were reported on the city’s south and east sides where Mike Emlaw, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, estimated areas may have received as much as four inches of precipitation in only a few hours time.

Overnight, Emlaw said, another 1 to 3 inches was expected to fall and more rain is anticipated today, including potentially heavy showers in the evening and night similar to Friday.

Utility work to slow I-95 traffic Sunday

Utility work Sunday morning will delay traffic on Interstate 95 near Jimmy Deloach Parkway.

Georgia Power will be relocating transmission lines across the interstate starting about 7:30 a.m., forcing Chatham County Sheriff’s deputies to pilot traffic at 20 miles per hour through the area, starting five miles from the line crossing.

The delay should only last about 15 minutes, but motorists are urged to use alternate routes if possible.
