Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan police homicide detectives have requested the public’s help in locating a Savannah man wanted for questioning in relation to an Aug. 26 shooting that left one man dead.

Investigators want to speak with 41-year-old Bobby Owens concerning the shooting death of 31-year-old Michael Wilson in the 500 block of West Gwinnett Street, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.

Wilson’s shooter, Miller said, remains at large.

House fire caused by lightning strike

A fire Monday on Savannah’s southside displaced four adults after lightning struck a house and set its attic on fire.

The damage to the home in the 12700 block of Sunnybrook Road, according to Red Cross spokesman Harry Walker, was minor but the family had to stay in a hotel because utilities had to be cut off.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The American Red Cross provided the hotel room, food and other items to the displaced people Friday night. The group said the fire was the seventh in a week started by lightning that forced people out of their homes.

The Red Cross encourages the general public to help it assist displaced families by making a generous financial donation to your local Red Cross, Walker said. To help people affected by house fires and other disasters call the Red Cross office in Savannah at 912-651-5300, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Man remains hospitalized after Saturday wreck

A 39-year-old Savannah man remains in critical condition after a single-car wreck late Saturday morning on DeRenne Avenue.

Addison A. Kramer was transported to Memorial University Medical Center about 11:20 a.m. after responding officers found him unconscious following the wreck at Reynolds Street, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.

The Savannah-Chatham police Major Accident Investigation Team has taken over the investigation of the wreck that officers believe occurred when the 2013 Toyota Corolla he was traveling in eastbound on DeRenne crossed all lanes of westbound traffic and struck a metal utility pole, Miller said.

South Carolina man charged with Effingham arson

A South Carolina man with a criminal history has been arrested on arson charges in Effingham County.

Matthew Collett, 33, of Anderson, S.C., has been charged with burglary and arson in the first degree, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

The arrest followed a house fire on Sandhill Road on Aug. 27. The vacant residence sustained extensive damage.

“During the investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal, it was determined that the fire was intentionally set,” Ehsanipoor said. “Investigators believe that an ignitable liquid was used to start the fire.”

Deputies found the fire after being called to a home on Ogeechee River Drive for a disorderly person report.

The Ogeechee River Drive home was the residence of a Collett family member.

The family member reported to deputies that he had asked Collett to leave the house.

Collett began screaming and warned the complainant “he would be sorry.”

The complainant told deputies that Collett had a history of violence and setting fires when he had been drinking.

Collett was convicted of arson in Chatham County in 1998, and was a volunteer firefighter, Ehsanipoor said.

Collett is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.
