A Savannah man on Monday was sentenced to 15 years in prison with 11 to serve without parole in a 2011 armed robbery in a Yamacraw Village apartment.
Quayshaun Floyd, 21, entered his plea without a sentence agreement before Chatham County Superior Court Chief Judge Michael Karpf shortly before jury selection was scheduled to begin for his trial.
Karpf imposed the 11-year term on the armed robbery count with another four years on probation. He then added a consecutive five-year probationary term for possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Meanwhile, the alleged gunman in the robbery, Daqwan Young, went on trial Monday.
The victim, Xavier McIver, testified he was at the apartment of a female friend of Floyd’s when he was accosted and beaten by a gunman with a sawed-off rifle who took his Spike Lee Limited Edition shoes, pants and a Pirates baseball cap.
Floyd was not present when the robbery began but came while it was going on and participated, McIver said.
Floyd was arrested wearing the shoes and cap, a police detective testified.
Defense attorney Richard Darden urged Karpf to impose 10 years in the robbery charge plus a five-year consecutive term for the weapons charge, noting that prosecutors initially offered a 10-year term to serve.
But Assistant District Attorney Jerry Rothschild argued a 20-year term with 12 to serve was the appropriate sentence.
While Floyd was not the gunman, Rothschild said, “This does not happen without him.”
