The gunman in a 2011 armed robbery at a Yamacraw Village apartment was convicted Tuesday on charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Daqwan Young, 21, was sentenced by Chatham County Superior Court Chief Judge Michael Karpf to life in prison with the possibility of parole plus five years probation for the firearms violation.

Evidence presented by Assistant District Attorney Jerry Rothschild indicated Young, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, assaulted Xavier McIver of Statesboro on April 8, 2011, and stole the victim’s Spike Lee Limited Edition shoes, pants and a Pirates baseball cap.

Co-defendant Quayshaun Floyd, 21, on Monday pleaded guilty to the same charges. Karpf sentenced him to 15 years in prison with 11 to serve and a total of nine years on probation.

The victim testified he was visiting a female friend of Floyd’s when he was accosted.

St. Patrick’s Day parking

Parking will be available on Hutchinson Island during St. Patrick’s Day festivities Saturday.

The city of Savannah, Chatham Area Transit and the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center are working together to ease parking and transportation issues during the celebration, said Bret Bell, city spokesman.

Parking will be available at the Trade & Convention center for $15 — which includes roundtrip transportation across the river — beginning 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Those parking on Hutchinson will be able to use either the ferry or a shuttle to cross over the Savannah River.

The ferry will operate from 7 a.m. Saturday until 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

CAT will also offer a shuttle over the Talmadge Bridge to Indian Street just west of River Street and back from 7 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.

Bell said parking on Hutchinson will help those attending the parade avoid heavy downtown traffic during the celebration.
