A man was hospitalized with serious injuries Wednesday afternoon after he stepped into the path of a car on a roadway in west Savannah, police said.

At about 1:56 p.m. officers were called to the wreck at West Bay and Hudson streets, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

According to accident investigators, the 42-year-old man stepped into the roadway from the north side of West Bay. He was struck by a Cadillac CTS traveling west in the right lane of Bay Street, Baker said.

The driver of the Cadillac could not avoid the pedestrian, Baker said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment of injuries police described as serious.

This case remains under investigation by the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

Police hunt man in robbery, assault at Thunderbolt American Legion post

Thunderbolt police are looking for a man they say robbed an American Legion post and hit a bartender Saturday night.

The bartender opened the back door to air cigarette smoke from American Legion Post 36 at 2309 Victory Drive in the small town about 8:19 p.m. Saturday when the incident began, said Thunderbolt Police Chief Bob Merriman. Then, a man jumped a fence, came inside the facility and robbed the bartender’s person before taking money from the cash register and a safe, Merriman said.

During the robbery, the man was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun and at one point struck the bartender with his fist, the police chief said.

After making off with an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled back over the fence. Police called in a K-9, and the man was tracked by scent to a nearby canal where the trail was lost, Merriman said.

Merriman said the man appeared to be familiar with the location that was robbed.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation artist provided Thunderbolt police with a sketch of the suspect. Police describe him as a 20-24-year-old light-skinned black man who stands 6 feet to 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 150-160 pounds. He was wearing a white tank top, black shorts and white tennis shoes, police said.

Investigators ask anyone with information on the case or the suspect to call Thunderbolt police at 912-354-3818 or CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020. Tipsters to CrimeStoppers remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

Man charged in Effingham home invasion

Sheriff’s deputies in Effingham County arrested a man in connection with an Effingham County robbery last month.

On April 24, two masked men entered a residence on Mockingbird Drive with firearms and took an undisclosed amount of cash, said David Ehsanipoor, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Two adults and a child were in the residence when the incident took place.

Deputies have charged Antonial Kirkland, 19, of Guyton with two counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of kidnapping, three counts of false imprisonment, burglary, cruelty to children and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Ehsanipoor said.

“The victims in this crime were specifically targeted and the investigation is ongoing,” Ehsanipoor said.

Kirkland was currently being held in the Effingham County jail Tuesday night.

Expect slowed traffic as construction begins today on the Ga. 204 interchange project at King George Boulevard.

The speed limit will be reduced from 55 mph to 35 mph within the construction zone, which runs from near Grove Point Road to Veterans Parkway, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes if possible.
