A 9-month-old girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after falling from a balcony inside a downtown Savannah hotel Friday night.

The child had been propped on the fifth-floor inside balcony of the Hyatt Regency Savannah on West Bay Street when she slipped from her mother’s grip about 8:45 p.m. and fell, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

The girl was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in critical condition, Miller said Friday night.

Detectives were still investigating the matter Saturday, and police could not release any additional information on the case.

Miller said the girl and her family were visiting from out of town.

Man killed in Effingham crash

A man was killed in a motorcycle accident on McCall Road early Saturday morning.

“Initial reports indicate that an adult male was riding his motorcycle traveling north on McCall Road toward Blue Jay Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control and hit a tree,” said David Ehsanipoor, spokesman for the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was thrown from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Team.
