Port Wentworth police are asking the public’s help locating a man they say escaped from the confines of a patrol car.

Police responding to reports of a suspicious person in the area of Phillips Avenue found 22-year-old Derek Morgan, whom they detained while investigating his reported suspicious behavior, said Detective Cpl. Brian Phinney.

While Morgan was seated in the patrol vehicle, he climbed through the vehicle’s partition, escaped and ran away, Phinney said.

While fleeing police, Morgan is believed to have broken into a home and may have changed clothes, Phinney said.

Police describe Morgan as a white male standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall who weighs 160 pounds and has light brown hair and full beard.

Phinney said Morgan is wanted for arrest on the following charges: loitering and prowling, possession of a controlled substance, escape, obstruction by fleeing and burglary.

Though he was not armed when he escaped police custody, officers say Morgan should not be approached. Investigators ask anyone with information about Morgan’s whereabouts to call the Port Wentworth police department at 912-964-4360 or CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020.
