The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office says a person who was in deputies’ custody Tuesday afternoon produced a razor and cut his throat while in the back of a patrol car.

Deputies found Ralph Terrill, 49, in the 12000 block of Sunny Brook Road at 3:30 p.m., said Gena Bilbo, sheriff’s spokeswoman. A warrant had been issued for Terrill’s arrest by Bryan County after he failed to appear in court on a DUI charge, she said.

Terrill was arrested and searched, Bilbo said.

Deputies handcuffed Terrill in front of his body because he had a medical condition requiring it. Once inside the back of a patrol car, Terrill produced a razor he had hidden on his person and cut his throat, Bilbo said.

He was taken to Memorial Univeristy Medical Center, and was alert and talking after the incident, Bilbo said. The extent of his injuries was unknown Tuesday afternoon.
