The family of a traveling man killed in a hit-and-run wreck on Savannah’s southside over the weekend is offering $10,000 for information leading to an arrest for his death.

Peter J. Meyer, 72, died after being struck by a vehicle on Abercorn Street, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman. He lived in Quechee, Vt., and Orchid Island, Fla., where he was headed for the winter when he stopped in Savannah for the night.

He was hit and thrown while crossing the street, and his body was not found about 10:30 p.m.

“Mr. Meyer was a Vietnam veteran, a successful businessman with Merrill Lynch and a devoted husband, father and grandfather,” said Jill Zuckman, a spokesman for the family. “We are imploring people to please come forward if they have any information at all that could lead to an arrest.”

“The Meyer family is heartbroken over the loss of Mr. Meyer. He was the life of every party and a huge presence in the lives of his wife of 50 years, two daughters, two sons-in-law and five grandchildren.”

Police investigators say they are looking for a 1999 or 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe or Suburban with damage to its front on the right side. Anyone who may have seen the truck near the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center should contact police immediately.
