Police have charged an 85-year-old local man with vehicular homicide in a November wreck that claimed the life of musician Jonathan Athon, a member of the Savannah metal band Black Tusk.

Joseph Lane Reeves Jr. was arrested Thursday for failure to stop at a stop sign and second degree homicide by vehicle. Both charges are misdemeanors.

The charges were filed after an investigation by the Savannah-Chatham police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team, said Julian Miller, metro police spokesman.

Athon, 32, and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Emily Boutwell, were riding a 1981 Harley Davidson south through downtown on Price Street just before 9:30 p.m. Nov. 7 when the motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side door of an Acura SUV that was being driven east on East Jones Street, police said.

Athon and Boutwell were taken to Memorial University Medical Center, where Athon died two days later.
