Police are asking the public to help identify a group of males they say attacked and beat a visiting couple in downtown Savannah on Monday morning.

The man and woman from Riverview, Fla., were walking back to their hotel at 2:19 a.m. when a group of three white males and two Hispanic males attempted to steal the man’s necklace, said Eunica Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman. When he resisted, both were thrown to the ground and kicked in the head and face. When they left, the attackers took a black fox jacket from the male, Baker said.

Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. They told officers the attack seemed to be more for sport than an actual robbery, Baker said.

The attackers were in their early 20s, clean shaven with short, groomed haircuts. After the attack, they entered a maroon, 2000s model sport sedan and drove away.

Metro police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time and may have seen the confrontation to help provide information. They also are asking anyone who might know the suspects to come forward.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

A tip line also is open directly to investigators at 912-525-3124 and most area clergy have agreed to serve as liaisons for anyone who would like to share information with police anonymously.
