Savannah-Chatham police say an off-duty officer from their department foiled a burglary Friday morning on his way to work.

The West Chatham Precinct sergeant responded to a 911 call found a pickup truck partially in the roadway and a shattered front door to O’Reilly Auto Parts on the 4100 block of Ogeechee Road at 6:10 a.m., said Julian Miller, metro police spokesman.

Hamilton William Smith, 22, of Brittlewood Court, was located in the building. It was determined that he also had entered a truck that was parked nearby and he had taken the pickup in the roadway without permission, Miller said.

Smith has been charged with burglary, entering auto and auto theft.

Detectives from the West Chatham Precinct continue to investigate.
