Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office say they believe the Monday shooting of a man in his Sun City, S.C., home may have been in defense of another person.

William Bryant, 45, died of multiple gunshot wounds Monday morning about 7:20 a.m. after he was shot by his mother, Marilou Bryant, inside their home on Raven Glass Lane, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

According to the news release, the investigation has uncovered substantial evidence to support that Marilou Bryant was acting in defense of another after William Bryant, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound former military serviceman, made threats of violence toward her and his grandmother.

William Bryant was behaving aggressively and attempting to enter his 91-year-old grandmother’s bedroom when Marilou Bryant intervened and shot him with a handgun, the release said.

Marilou Bryant is not being charged at this time, the release said.

Sheriff’s office investigators are in contact with the Beaufort County Solicitor’s Office, and the investigation is ongoing.
