Police say the man suspected of dragging one of their officers in his car over the weekend turned himself in Thursday morning.
Brandon Christopher Adams, 23, was arrested at Savannah-Chatham police headquarters and charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and felony obstruction of an officer, said Eunicia Baker, department spokeswoman.
Adams is accused of nearly running an officer over Saturday in his black Ford Focus sedan.
Police spokesman Julian Miller said Adams refused the officer’s directions, entered his car and speed away while the officer’s arm was trapped between the seat and seat belt of his car at the Shell convenience store on the 12000 block of Abercorn Street.
The Southside Precinct patrol officer had answered a shoplifting call at the store when the manager approached him and identified Adams as a man who had cashed a fake check several months ago. When the officer approached Adams, he lied to the officer about his name, entered the car and sped away while the officer was attempting to turn off the ignition.
The officer was able to free himself from the moving car then had to roll away from it to avoid being struck by the rear wheel. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
