Police say they arrested a 19-year-old Savannah man Tuesday for an armed robbery in a downtown square the previous night.

Daniel Brantley is charged with armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime.

Officers responded to a reported gun discharge in Johnson Square at Bull and Congress streets about 11:46 p.m. Monday. The found two people who had been robbed at gunpoint minutes earlier, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

Detectives believe the suspect opened fire after realizing that one of the victims also was armed with a gun. The victim and suspect exchanged fire before the suspect ran west toward Bryan Street, Baker said. No injuries were reported.

Police found Brantley on Drayton and Bay streets, and a gun tied to the crime scene was in his possession, Baker said.
