Police say a 26-year-old man died over the weekend when he was struck by a freight train near in Chatham County.
Alexander Lucas was driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse west on Grove Point Road about 2:41 a.m. Saturday when the car got stuck on railroad tracks, said Darnisha Green, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman. Lucas got out of the car and, for reasons police are trying to figure out, was standing on the tracks. An oncoming CSX train was unable to stop in time and struck Lucas and the car, Green said.
He died at the scene.
The police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the case.
