What police in Savannah are calling a violent confrontation between a man and two officers Saturday morning led to all three being treated for injuries.

Angar Derium Williams, 36, of the 1900 block of Cimarron St., was charged with obstruction, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license, obstruction of an officer with injury, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, removal of a firearm from a public official and parole violation after he fought with three officers in a neighborhood off Ogeechee Road about 5:30 a.m., said police spokesman Julian Miller.

Two West Chatham Precinct patrol officers had responded to neighborhood complaints of suspicious vehicles near a park on Pate Street. While questioning the occupants of one car they encountered Williams in a second vehicle smelling of marijuana, Miller said. Williams was unable to provide a driver’s license and a struggle began when they asked him to exit the car, Miller said.

Miller said Williams was subdued when other officers responded. He and the two injured officers were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Williams was sentenced to seven years in prison for possession of cocaine in December 2010, and was paroled in February, Miller said.

Man drops off WWI-era ordnance at Bluffton police station

The Bluffton, S.C., police department summoned bomb squads Monday morning to its headquarters in Buckwalter Place when a man brought in explosive military ordnance for disposal, according to a department news release.

Capt. Angela McCall-Tanner said the man told police the material has been in his family for several years and could date back as far as the World War I era.

McCall-Tanner said “out of an abundance of precaution,” the area around the vehicle was closed off to civilian traffic and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad and a Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal team arrived on the scene to assess the material.

They were able to confirm it was military ordnance, but more information about its content was not available. The material has been collected by the military for proper disposal, McCall-Tanner said.

Funding for mobile CEMA satellite system approved

Funding for a new mobile satellite system for the Chatham Emergency Management Agency has been approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Homeland Security officials awarded the county a Port Security Grant to replace the agency’s existing communications satellite system on the roof of its Emergency Operations Center off Chatham Parkway. The back-up system has been deemed inoperable.

The federal grant covers 75 percent of the cost of the $29,980 satellite, with the county funding the remaining 25 percent local match of $7,495. The county commission voted to accept the grant on Friday.
