A 47-year-old Savannah woman died after a pickup truck hit her Monday night as she tried to retrieve something from an intersection.
Donna Neal Sugg, of the 600 block of Abercorn Street, died at Memorial University Medical Center after the 8:12 p.m. incident, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.
She had stopped a green Dodge pickup in the inside southbound lane of Ogeechee Road at Chatham Parkway and was bending over to pick up items that had fallen from her truck when she was struck by another pickup driven north in the inside lane by a 22-year-old Savannah man.
The intersection was closed to all traffic for several hours as officers from the Major Accident Investigation Team looked into the wreck.
Miller said Tuesday that investigation was continuing.
Fire displaces 13 in West Savannah
Two Savannah families were displaced by an early Tuesday morning fire at a West Savannah apartment building.
The American Red Cross Chatham County Disaster Action Team provided eight adults and five children between 2 and 7 years old assistance after a kitchen fire caused minor damage to one of the apartments in the 200 block of Scarbrough Street, said Robin Wingate, local Red Cross director. Although the damage was limited, the power had to be turned off to the units.
Red Cross provided the victims funds for food and temporary shelter until they can move back in.
