Downtown traffic will be rerouted for several hours today for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.
The parade starts at 10 a.m., but police will start closing roads earlier, and traffic is expected to be affected until about 3 p.m., said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.
Road closures throughout the staging area will begin promptly at 6:30 a.m. The staging area runs from East Broad Street to Price Street and Liberty Street to Gwinnett Street.
The parade begins at East Broad and Liberty streets, then travels north on East Broad to Broughton Street, west on Broughton to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and south on MLK to Anderson Street to disband.
Roads along the staging area and parade route will remain closed throughout the parade’s duration.
“No parking zone” notices were posted along Broughton and MLK on Sunday morning. Vehicles remaining in the no parking zone after 7 a.m. today will be towed at their owners’ expense, Baker said.
Delivery vehicles with Bay Street destinations should take Interstate 516 at DeRenne Avenue to northbound Truman Parkway at President Street to access Bay.
Warnings issued for Georgia Power scam
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is warning Georgia Power customers that scammers are once again calling and visiting residences, posing as company employees.
The imposters say the customer has a past due balance, and in order to prevent shutoff, they must purchase a pre-paid card by providing credit and debit account information.
A real company employee would never ask a customer to do this. If a customer’s account ever became past due, the person would receive a prerecorded message that gives a phone number they can call to find out about their account, Effingham County Sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.
If you think you have received calls or visits from a scam artist, you can call Georgia Power’s 24 hour customer service line at 888-660-5890.
Expect delays on Gulfstream Road
A single lane of Gulfstream Road will be closed from near Mincey Boulevard to Robert B. Miller Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
The lane will be closed so that work can be done on storm drainage that runs under the roadway. Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible.
