Savannah-Chatham police are seeking the public’s help identifying a man who stole cellphones from a Sam’s Club on the city’s southside.

Furthermore, police believe him responsible for smartphone thefts at the store’s locations in at least two states, said Eunica Baker, metro police spokeswoman.

The Savannah incident occurred about 9 a.m. Dec. 30 at the Sam’s on the 1900 block of East Montgomery Crossroad. A man wearing a small backpack pried open a display case containing iPhones, then placed 14 phones in his backpack and left, Baker said.

Detectives believe he left the scene in a newer model black Dodge Charger.

The suspect is linked to thefts from Sam’s stores in DeKalb County as well as Lumberton County, N.C., Baker said. In each case, the thief made off with smartphones from the electronics department and left in the same type of vehicle.

Police describe the suspect as a black male in his 20s who stands about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and weighs 160-180 pounds.

Anyone with information on his identity is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
