The victim of a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 16 near the U.S. 280 exit in Bryan County was flown to Memorial University Medical Center on Wednesday morning.
According to Bryan County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dee Ann Kromer, the unidentified woman was traveling westbound when her car crossed the center median and eastbound lanes, rolled over and came to rest on the side of the highway about 11:15 a.m.
“A witness traveling eastbound said her car was airborne when it crossed the median,” Kromer said. Kromer added that the woman, a Fleming resident, had a compound fracture of one of her legs, but was in largely stable condition before being transported.
The cause of the accident is unknown.
Utility work to interrupt I-16 traffic
Installation of power lines will disrupt traffic flow on Interstate 16 on Saturday and Sunday.
Police will pace traffic at 20 mph beginning eastbound at Interstate 95 and westbound at Interstate 516. Multiple paces lasting about 10 minutes will occur throughout the weekend. All work is weather contingent.
Motorists are advised to take other routes if possible.
Police seek man for questioning
Police are seeking a local man for questioning in reference to two March 17 shootings.
Derrick Gatch, 24, is not considered a suspect in the case, said Eunicia Baker, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman. Detectives would like to interview him about the shootings that left 24-year-old Barry Trevon Williams dead on the 2000 block of Mississippi Avenue and sent a 25-year-old man to a hospital.
A man charged with murder and aggravated assault in those shootings, 28-year-old James Harris Jr. of Savannah, was arrested Tuesday in Bluffton, S.C., by U.S. marshals and local police.
Gatch, who is a resident of the 200 block of Wiley Bottom Road, is described as a white man with brown hair and brown eyes who stands 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds, Baker said.
Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or investigators directly and confidentially at 912-525-3124.
Man given probation for sexual exploitation of children
A Savannah man pleaded guilty in Effingham County to sexual exploitation of children and was sentenced to 10 years of probation.
Joshua Kyle Conner, 27, entered an Alford plea on March 13. Under an Alford plea, a defendant who believes there’s enough evidence for conviction can plead guilty while still maintaining his innocence.
In addition to the probation, Effingham County Superior Court Judge John R. Turner sentenced Conner to serve 120 to 180 days in a probation detention center, pay a $4,000 fine and stay out of the court circuit.
Conner also will be subject to sex offender guidelines and computer use conditions.
An indictment said Conner, on Jan. 9, 2013, distributed 10 videos depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
He was one of five men arrested on April 10, 2013, by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes against Children Task Force in a child pornography sweep.
