A Port Wentworth man died in a three-vehicle wreck Tuesday morning in Garden City.
Jason Harley, 38, died at the scene after a Monte Carlo he was driving northbound on Ga. 25 clipped another car then went airborne and collided with a truck in a southbound lane about 7 a.m., said Garden City Police Chief David Lyons.
The police chief said a Cadillac had slowed down in the northbound lane just north of Smith Avenue on a bridge over a canal when Harley came up from behind and was unable to slow down.
The Monte Carlo that Harley was driving swerved, clipped the side of the Cadillac, then went airborne and collided with the side and front of a heavy-duty Ford work truck coming south, Lyons said.
The impact pushed the Monte Carlo about 50-60 yards down the highway, Lyons said.
“There is a high probability that speed was a factor,” Lyons said.
Harley died on scene, and the drivers of the two other vehicles were taken to Memorial University Medical Center, where they were treated and released. Lyons said neither of them face any charges.
The investigation indicates Harley was not wearing a seatbelt, Lyons said.
Ga. 25 was closed for several hours while police investigated and cleared the scene. Georgia Ports Authority police assisted with traffic and firefighters and EMS also responded to the wreck.
The investigation is continuing as police await the results of an autopsy and toxicology reports, Lyons said.
