The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a hit-and-run driver.
About 8 p.m. Friday, Barbara Jean Fail, 67, of Bloomingdale was crossing U.S. 80 near Pine View Drive in Effingham County when she was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene, traveling westbound toward Bryan County.
Investigators believe the suspect vehicle is a gray or white car. The vehicle sustained front-end damage and will also be missing a windshield wiper.
The victim was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Georgia State Patrol or the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at 912-754-3349.
Firefighters put out blaze at Garden City recycling plant
Garden City and Pooler fire crews worked for about eight hours Sunday to extinguish a fire at Newell Recycling on Sonny Perdue Drive.
Amy Headrick, with the Garden City Fire Department, said the blaze started around 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
“It was basically a big scrap pile of ground-up cars that caught fire. Just a big debris pile,” Headrick said.
A cause has not yet been determined and no injuries were reported.
Road work to affect traffic on I-16
The Georgia Department of Transporation will be installing temporary eastbound lane closures today on Interstate 16/Ga. 404 between mile post 152 and mile post 153 in Chatham County.
The closures are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. today through Wednesday. These maintenance operations with lane closures will be utilized for asphalt repair.
Personnel and heavy equipment will be working in close proximity to the roadway. Motorists are asked to drive slowly and exercise extreme caution in this work zone. Message signs, barrels and/or cones will be utilized to alert the public of the upcoming changes.
