Garden City police say they’ve identified and arrested the woman suspected of stealing a wallet from the lobby area of their department Tuesday.
After sweeping the area for fingerprints, detectives identified Stacy Gardner of Savannah in connection with the theft, said Capt. Gil Ballard. Detectives watched video of the suspect touching certain surfaces, dusted them for fingerprints and got assistance from forensics officers at the Savannah-Chatham police department.
Police charged her with theft by taking.
Ballard said a woman was at the police department to pay a citation Tuesday morning when she went back to her car to retrieve some information. She took her handbag with her, but left her wallet on a lower ledge that is not visible by court clerks.
At that point, Gardner came in and had a short conversation with the clerk about having someone else’s court date moved, Ballard said. She did not provide her name. Ballard said she grabbed the wallet and left before the victim returned.
She was arrested late Wednesday evening.
