Police say they believe a prominent Colombian businessman and member of a political family who was found dead in a downtown Savannah hotel Thursday committed suicide.
Andres Felipe Blackburn Cardona, 43, of Bogota was found hanged about 2 p.m. Thursday at the Marshall House, confirmed Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman. Detectives do not suspect foul play.
An investigation into the death is ongoing.
Miller said metro police provided findings of their preliminary investigation to Colombian authorities, and that local police are working with the South American country on the case.
Blackburn Cardona was the son of one of the founders of new liberalism in Colombia, according to news reports in that country.
His name has been in national news in Colombia since he disappeared from the capital of Bogota on Feb. 23. Blackburn Cardona’s family had reported him missing to authorities, the El Tiempo newspaper reported.
Reports said he flew to Miami then traveled to Washington before being found dead in Savannah.
Blackburn Cardona’s family has claimed his body.
