Savannah-Chatham police closed access to the Talmadge Bridge for 45 minutes this morning as emergency responders worked to calm a distraught male threatening to jump.

A contingent of Downtown Precinct patrol officers, metro crisis intervention team officers and Southside Emergency Services technicians involved the man in discussions and brought in a close friend of the subject to help convince him to accept help. He was transported by ambulance for evaluation, said Julian Miller, metro police spokesman.

Police diverted traffic from the Oglethorpe Avenue entrance ramp and restricted U.S. 17 traffic to the far left lane to allow for the emergency vehicles and first responders. Metro marine patrol officers and a police chaplain were in route when he agreed to step down from the side of the bridge.

Traffic reopened about 4:35 a.m.
