Port Wentworth police have arrested Matthew Okumura for shooting himself and orchestrating a story to blame his girlfriend.
Sgt. Brian Phinney, department spokesman, said Okumura was arrested for the following crimes:
• False statements and writings; concealment of facts
• False report of a crime
• Possession of tools for the commission of a crime
• Unlawful possession of firearm or weapon
• Possession of firearm/knife during commission of certain crimes
• Criminal defamation
• Discharging gun while under the influence
• Reckless conduct
• Removal or alteration of identification marks from property
Okumura was denied bond on these offenses and will be in Port Wentworth Municipal Court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
The shooting took place late Thursday at a residence on Holly Spring Circle in Port Wentworth. Okumura’s girlfriend was originally taken into custody as suspect, but was later released after being interviewed and fully cooperating with investigators, Phinney said.
