The Chatham County Sheriff’s office says two people were arrested Tuesday after the stolen vehicle they were in struck a deputy who was trying to pull them over.
Just after 11:45 a.m., Cpl. Roger Brown attempted to pull over a white Chevrolet Impala that was reported stolen out of South Carolina. The driver, 22 year-old Jahques Arkeem Rogers, failed to pull over and attempted to go around traffic, striking the curb and flattening his tire, said Gena Bilbo, sheriff’s office spokeswoman. As the deputy continued past him, the suspect struck the deputy’s vehicle several times, Bilbo said.
Rogers eventually came to a stop on Interstate 516 and both he and his passenger, 32 year-old Mychena Dawn Byrd, fled the vehicle, Bilbo said. After a short foot pursuit, both suspects were taken into custody. A reserve deputy, Michael Holmes, was the first to make contact with the suspect after hearing the call for assistance on the radio, taking Rogers into custody.
A stolen Glock with a 30-round extended clip was found beside the driver’s side of the vehicle, Bilbo said, adding that a small amount of crack cocaine, digital scales and a counterfeit 100 dollar bill were located inside the vehicle.
Rogers had several outstanding warrants from other agencies.
Rogers is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing to elude, aggravated assault, theft by receiving stolen gun, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and suspended license.
Byrd is being charged with theft by receiving stolen auto, possession of a controlled substance, obstruction by fleeing as well as bringing stolen property across state lines.
