With the long weekend in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day underway in Savannah, police are out in force across Chatham County to crack down on drunken driving.

While there is surely a visibly heavy law enforcement presence in downtown Savannah, police in Port Wentworth want to make sure revelers who have had too much to drink get the message not to head there.

Police in the city of about 6,000 residents roughly 8 miles northwest of downtown Savannah have initiated a zero-tolerence enforcement period they’re calling Operation Thunderstorm that will last through the weekend.

Over the past two days, police in the city have arrested 40 people for various offenses and issued more than 200 citations, said Detective Cpl. Kenny McDonald. In addition to making arrests for drunken driving, police also made arrests for outstanding warrants, drugs and driving on suspended or without licenses, McDonald said.

“We ask that anyone who is participating in the festivities in Savannah remains safe by using designated drivers,” said Port Wentworth Police Chief Matt Libby in a news release. “We will have zero tolerance for those who choose to drink and drive.”
